DocuWest 5th Annual Documentary Film Festival

September 11 - 15, 2013

We are proud to host an extraordinary variety of documentaries from Colorado and around the world, in the 5th annual DocuWest Documentary Film Festival. The Festival, presented by Foothills Art Center as part of their 2013 exhibition schedule, is brought in part by the Artful Journey School of Fine Arts and in partnership with The Dairy Center for the Arts.

This year’s opening night film, Good Ol’ Freda, tells the story of Freda Kelly, a shy Liverpudlian teenager asked to work for a young local band hoping to make it big: the Beatles. As the Beatles’ fame multiplies, Freda bears witness to music and cultural history but never exploits her insider access. Their loyal secretary from beginning to end, Freda finally tells her tales for the first time in 50 years. The opening night film will show on Wednesday, September 11 at 7:15 pm at the American Mountaineering Center in Golden.

Our featured film will be Crash Reel. Snowboarder Kevin Pearce was on the verge of Olympic glory when a horrific crash left him with a traumatic brain injury. This intimate, moving account of his rise, fall and challenging road back examines the glory and peril of extreme sports.  It’s a comeback story with a difference. Screening times will be announced soon.

Visit for all the Festival details as they become available!

Threads of Change: Colorado Textiles Now

July 13 – September 1, 2013

Featuring a selection of Colorado’s most outstanding textile artists, Threads of Change shines a spotlight on art created in this versatile medium, from across our state. The exhibition celebrates fiber art’s rich traditions, as well as new expressions where concepts of art and craft intersect.

Threads of Change: Colorado Textiles Now features outstanding Colorado textile artists whose work demonstrates the potential of fiber to transcend its traditional utilitarian associations and stretch the boundaries between art and craft. In this exhibition, visitors see traditional techniques used to create woven, stitched, knotted, beaded or quilted works that speak to a wide variety of artistic and conceptual issues. Moving beyond function into the world of ideas, Threads of Change demonstrates how Colorado artists are creating new form and meaning using diverse techniques, processes and materials.

Since the middle of the last century, definitions of what constitutes ‘legitimate’ materials for art has been vastly expanded to include fiber, glass, found objects, plastics and other industrial materials. These new materials are now used by artists to explore concepts of identity, domesticity and gender. The inherent qualities of various types of textiles are also being exploited to create two- and three dimensional objects that can be draped, folded, printed upon or beaded to create abstract or representational images.

This exhibition will highlight the work of these top Colorado artists working in the textile medium: Theresa Anderson, Regina Benson, Anne Bossert, Lynn Cornelius, Jo Fitsell, Kevin Kissell, Tom Lundberg, Mary McCauley, Amy Clarke Moore, Jill Powers, Sara Rockinger, Carol Shinn, Rebecca Vaughan, Robb Watt and Sara Goldenberg White.

April 6 - June 30, 2013

Foothills Art Center is thrilled to bring an extraordinary and rarely viewed exhibition to Colorado, from April 6 through June 30, 2013! Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist presents a unique selection of drawings, prints and photographs by the illustrious French artist, Edgar Degas (1834-1917). Exploring beyond Degas’ familiar ballerinas, you will experience a fascinating view into his art and life including his early drawings of objects in the Louvre Museum. The exhibition is enriched with rare works of art on paper by friends and colleagues in Degas’ circle; other well-known artists of the period including Mary Cassatt, Paul Cezanne, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Jean-August-Dominique Ingres, Gustav Moreau and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

We are honored to provide an opportunity for visitors to experience Degas, one of the fathers of Impressionism, with these beautiful and thought-provoking works. This follows our incredibly popular 2012 exhibition of world-renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly, which welcomed an unprecedented 17,000 visitors to Foothills Art Center. We are proud to bring the Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist exhibition to Colorado, and anticipate we will once again have a record-breaking number of visitors, from across the state and beyond, in our galleries.

Housed in a building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, our newly renovated galleries will provide an ideal setting for this unique exhibition. Together with a full complement of lectures, tours, panel discussions, in-gallery experiences and studio classes, we will bring the exhibition to life!

Edgar Degas: The Private Impressionist – Works on Paper by the Artist and His Circle was organized by Landau Traveling Exhibitions, Los Angeles, CA in association with Denenberg Fine Arts, West Hollywood, CA. This exhibition is presented by GURA

Robert Gratiot: Re-Imagined Realities

March 26 - June 28, 2013

Contemporary painter Robert Gratiot’s canvases combine a strong sense of abstraction and realism. While he works in two strongly differing subject orientations, quite a few aesthetic and conceptual precepts exist and overlap between the two. In addition to being a popular instructor at The Art Students League of Denver, Robert Gratiot’s work is sought after by collectors coast to coast and across Europe.

Colorado Watercolor Society – 2013

March 2-24, 2013

Foothills Art Center is delighted to host the 22nd Annual Colorado Watercolor Society State Exhibition. Last year’s exhibit drew in visitors from across the state, as well as local media. This year, our newly renovated galleries will be brought to life by 92 exciting works in the watercolor medium selected by world-renowned juror, Thomas W. Schaller.

Considered one of the foremost architectural artists in the country, Thomas Schaller enjoyed a 20-year career as a NYC architect. Now a full-time watercolor artist living in Los Angeles, Schaller’s work has been exhibited all over the world. He holds Signature Member status at both AWS and NWS and is featured in many national and international publications. Schaller has also authored two well-known books, Architecture in Watercolor, and The Art of Architectural Drawing.

Three Masters of Colorado Woodturning

January 22 - March 15, 2013

Over the past 25 years, woodturning has come into its own as a means for artistic expression. Vessels, tables and other utilitarian objects are now seen as rich in possibilities for the artists. Colorado is home to many outstanding woodturners and Foothills Art Center is pleased to present the work of three outstanding practioners: Jon Garcia, Keith Gotschall and Paul Stafford.

Each of these artists works with nature’s raw material, demonstrating a unique skill and sensibility. Paul Stafford, well known to our audiences for his zippered vessels, is represented by a number of works that take their inspiration from the underlying nature of wood itself. Keith Gotschall, who lives in Salida Colorado, is interested in the expressive capacities of wood to be used as furniture and sculpture. Jon Garcia, who graduated from the School of Industrial Design at MSU Denver, creates elaborate, intricate wood-laminate objects that are often designed on a computer.
