Looking for a creative way to fill the spring break week? Art lovers, ages 6–12, gain inspiration from Foothills exhibitions and participate in hands-on projects that offer in-depth art experiences and technical instruction. Students grow creatively and strengthen their artistic capabilities while they develop collaborative and critical thinking skills. Each day includes fun gallery activities and the viewing of original works of art, a one-hour lunch break, and creative studio projects

Furry Friends - Watercolor Pet Portraits and more - SOLD OUT

Instructor: Elaine Campbell  

Do you have a pet or animal that you love? Learn and practice drawing your friend in pencil, colored pencil, charcoal, and washes, culminating in a watercolor portrait of your pet. You'll be creating several items with their image. Please bring a photo or two on the first day.

Hand Building with Slabs - SOLD OUT

Instructor: Ashley Fulton 

During this class, each student will create a self-portrait sketch including a head, neck, body, arms, legs and feet. These pieces will then be cut out of clay slabs. Once the pieces are fired, the body parts will be colored and assembled using wire. These clay self-portraits can then be hung at home as a wall piece. Students will also explore using silkscreens and Designer Liner "glaze pens" to add images to the flat surface of a mug and plate that they make. These will be glazed so that they are food-safe, microwaveable, and dishwasher-safe.

Native American-Inspired Clay Creations

Instructor: Ashley Fulton

Students will use a coil-building method to create a mug, then use black slip to decorate the pot using geometric patterns in the style of the Ancestral Puebloans. Students will explore making sculptural work by creating clay ocarinas inspired by the Mayans. After looking at images of masks from various Native American cultures, students will create a clay mask of their own design.

Fun in the Sun - Cyanotypes

Instructor:  Ashley Fulton

Cyanotype is a photographic printing process that produces cyan-blue prints.  In this session, students will use solar rays to expose a negative of their image on cyanotype paper to create their sun prints.  During the class, each student will create cyanotypes using three different processes.

Kinetic Art - Just Add Sun - SOLD OUT

Build solar powered art sculptures this week with Mr. Carroll. Our friends from NREL (National Renewable Energy Labratory) are helping us put the Arts in STEM learning by providing solar panels, gears, and motors. You provide the young artist with curiosity and creativity.

Artist A Day - SOLD OUT

Instructor: Roy Annenberg

During this exciting week of art class, kids will get to be a different artist for each day!  They will learn about the life of the artist and how this affected the way their artwork looks.  The Pop Art of Roy Lichtenstein will inspire our giant-sized cartoon explosion drawings as if they came right out of a comic book! The soft watercolor paintings of Color Field artist Helen Frankenthaler will be the inspiration for fun free flowing paintings. Create fun optical illusions collages in a lot of different ways as we explore Op Art by Victor Vasarley. Learn how to make huge slices of pies and cakes as the dessert paintings of Wayne Thiebaud capture our minds. Lastly, the silly exaggerated portraits of Amedeo Modigliani will help us create our own silly exaggerated people. Collage, Paint, Draw, and Sculpt your way through a week of fun!l.

Kinetic Art - Get Your Art Moving! - SOLD OUT

Instructor: Maura McInerney 

Kinetic Art is back this summer! We will be exploring several different forms of art that moves. Everything from mobiles, with fun dangling things, to wire sculpture with moving parts. Both physical balance and visual balance are key factors with this kind of art. These kinds of sculptures move on their own and sometimes move with the help of the artist, [like a toy!]. Lots of fun if you like to build things!

HALF DAY Summer CLASses - AGES 4 TO 6

Art Instruction = Tuesday, wednesday, thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

**Half Day Extension for additional fee (1pm-4:30pm) 

This will be an option for parents who need the younger campers to stay the whole day. The second half of the day will be much less educationally intensive than the first. Some of the topics from the morning may be covered in the afternoons activities but their won’t be any progress made on the main projects so that students who leave at 1pm will not fall behind.  The extension option is available below.

Plein Air Camping -SOLD OUT

Instructor: Laura Svigel 

Come camping in our yard this summer.! Students will create and build temporary structures on our campus using natural materials. Our shelters will provide us inspiration for creating drawings and paintings of our surroundings. Students will work with watercolors and drawing materials to record and journal their experiences.

Inspired by our surroundings, students will create musical instruments to mimic the sounds we hear, within and around us, everyday. Students will be using clay and recycled materials to play and discover the noises we hear and the musical rhythms they inspire.

Robots, Robots Everywhere: creating art assemblage robots

Instructor: Amanda Metsala 

Robots are becoming more common in life as well as media. Students will be exploring aspects that a robot could have to make life easier as well as more enjoyable, like flying to school or dancing to music. Students will create and assemble a robot of their own using everyday objects like cans, wire, buttons, wheels, etc. that will show their ideas of what they would want their very own robot to do with them

Monsters and fuzzy friends: inventing and creating stuffed monsters and creatures. - SOLD OUT

Students will create and invent a monster or creature friend. They will look at personality traits as well as ways of expression. They will explore basic sewing and fabric techniques as well as creating stories about their newly created friend.

My Very Own Book

The age old art form of book making will thrill your child in this class as they experience the excitement of binding their own sketchbooks or stories. During this week we will be using materials like water color, oil pastels, collage and other mixed medias to create unique books bound in new and different ways. Not only will we create handmade books, but fill pages with drawings, paintings, collages, stories and poems!

Clay and Slime Surprise - SOLD OUT

The ultimate clay  experience! Students will have the opportunity to work in many different applications of clay, including making slime. Each day students will explore a new way to work in clay. We will be working in sculpture, slab-work, coil work, and pinch pots. Students will also glaze their own pieces as well. As a class, we will analyze and discuss how science and art connect with clay.

Elementary Art Prep: A little bit of everything!

This pre-K to 2nd grade readiness summer class, is for students to have the opportunity to explore many art materials. These art materials included; watercolor paints, tempera paints pastels, chalk, printmaking and drawing techniques. While exploring these fun and amazing materials, students will be learning art concepts, preparing them for elementary school art.
